New York City government (to be more exact, its Department of Environmental Protection), just published its 2015 Annual Water Supply and Quality Report  The report spells out the need to build a filtration facility in Upstate New York, and also warns of potential dangers of water contamination due to materials used in individual homes' plumbing systems...The need for water filtration on consumer's end becomes pretty obvious....

Water is such an essential part of our daily lives. We use it for so many things; drinking, cooking, bathing and cleaning. The list goes on. It is just so easy to turn on a tap and have all the water we need without even considering exactly what contaminants and health risks we are subjecting ourselves and our families to.

But do we really know what is in the water we use?

Many local governments would have you believe that tap water is safe for you and your family to use because it has been treated with chemical elements such as chlorine and fluoride. These chemicals were once thought to be a great way to kill the bacteria in our water but further investigation has shown that they can be quite detrimental to our health. While some people may not be affected by these additives they can, in some cases, lead to serious health problems.

And you thought water was healthy!

Research has shown that excessive chlorine can actually increase the risk of some types of cancer, not only by drinking the water, it can also be absorbed into the skin while you shower. Fluoride has been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Not only that, it can cause chronic joint pain and effect the thyroid which can result in obesity.

Lead is also a big problem when it comes to drinking water. Contrary to what you may have heard, NO amount of lead is safe. Traces of lead can be found in the water we drink due to it being used in the pipes for plumbing and water lines. This can be especially dangerous to children as it can cause not only mental, but also physical development problems. Do you really want to take that risk with your children?

A great way to ensure your water is safer is by investing in a quality filtration system, which are not only economical but are also environmentally sound.

One of the more popular systems uses a process called Reverse Osmosis. This process has been used for many years and was originally used to remove the salt from sea water, turning it into fresh water that is suitable to drink.

Often people don’t realize that this method also removes unwanted and harmful chemicals including fluoride compounds.

So how does it work? In simple terms, Reverse Osmosis forces water through a filter (known as a membrane). This membrane has tiny holes that filter out any unwanted particles. These particles stay behind the membrane and the fresh, clean water is able to flow through.

You may be aware of some of the controversy surrounding Reverse Osmosis systems, and whether or not they remove all the good minerals from the water and not just the bad elements. In actual fact, a quality system will come with mineralization blocks that add necessary minerals to filtered water. So you are left with a pure water that not only tastes better but is better for you.

There are many effective types of water filters and purifiers available today to suit your requirements and needs, either in your home or your business. They can range from counter top filters, under the sink filters and even water coolers.

In a world that is becoming more and more overcome with pollutants in the air and factors that we can’t control, it is important to make changes to benefit our family’s health when we can. Ensuring that the water we use is of optimal quality is something we can easily control, and is one of the most important changes we can make.

Can you afford not to?
